Hibiscus

The Sunny Cities Hibiscus series is an internationally recognized brand name.  Sunny Cities has changed the hibiscus horticulture business by offering consumers and growers significant advantages which have resulted in an ever increasing demand in the retail market.

Sunny Cities in an initiative of the Dutch based Hibiscus Werkgroep (work group).  This group of hibiscus growers currently consists of six members.  In 1992 the group continued the successful improvement project begun by the former CPRO of the University of Wageningen and PBG in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands.  The Hibiscus Werkgroep then bought the parent lines and assigned breeder Agriom Aalsmeer to continue the technical improvement of the hibiscus project.

Based on characteristics formulated by the Hibiscus Werkgroep, a new range of hibiscus varieties was born.  Today ten of these Sunny Cities varieties can be found in the Dutch flower auction offerings, playing a dominant role with a market share well above forty percent.
